Yi Yang

Violin

From concerto appearances to long-standing orchestral posts, Yi Yang has built an international career of remarkable breadth, moving between solo performance and ensemble playing across some of Europe’s most distinguished musical settings.

Born in China, Yi Yang studied with Professor Detlef Hahn at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where she completed her Master’s degree with distinction. Her studies were supported by scholarships from the Hattori Foundation and the Lyra Foundation in Switzerland, recognising her development as a young violinist.

Yi has appeared as a soloist with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Bern Symphony Orchestra and, on multiple occasions, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Her performances with the latter have included Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto Grosso No. 1, alongside violinist Sergey Levitin, Concertmaster of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Her concert work has also taken her to festivals in Risør and Stavanger in Norway and to Davos in Switzerland, contributing to an international career that has developed across several of Europe’s musical centres.

Since 2006, Yi has held the position of Third Concertmaster of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, forming a central part of her orchestral career for two decades. Alongside this long-standing position, she has maintained an extensive career as a guest musician, performing and touring with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, as well as performing with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. These engagements have taken her across a wide range of repertoire and orchestral settings throughout Europe.

Yi’s musical connections with London have continued throughout her career. Since 2023, she has regularly appeared as a guest player with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, returning to the city in which she completed her postgraduate studies.
