Victor Sangiorgio

Piano

From the concert platform to the recording studio, Victor Sangiorgio has built an international career of remarkable scope, combining a formidable repertoire with a lifelong affinity for chamber music and musical discovery.

Sicilian-born pianist Victor Sangiorgio has enjoyed an extensive international career as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and teacher. His London debut was hailed by The Times as “poetic perfection”, while Gramophone has described his recordings as “irresistible”, “truly outstanding” and “superbly colourful”.

Born in Sicily, Victor moved to Perth, Western Australia, at the age of four and gave his first public performances at five. By the age of 19, he had appeared as a soloist with all the major Australian orchestras and had recorded and broadcast extensively for national radio and television. While still a student, he toured mainland China and Hong Kong as a soloist with the Australian Youth Orchestra. Following success in some of Australia’s most prestigious awards, he continued his studies and professional development in Siena, Rome and the United States before settling in England.

Victor has since performed throughout the UK, Europe, Africa, Asia, New Zealand and the United States, appearing with orchestras including the Sydney, Melbourne and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Hallé, Ulster Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Royal Northern Sinfonia. He has appeared at the BBC Proms and international festivals, and his performances have been broadcast by BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, the BBC World Service and Classic FM, as well as by WFMT in Chicago and Los Angeles. He has worked with conductors including Claudio Abbado, Morton Gould, Sir Charles Groves, Andrew Litton, Jane Glover, En Shao, Martin Yates, Stanisław Skrowaczewski, André Previn, Jorge Mester and Carl Davis.

Chamber music has remained an important part of Victor’s musical life. His collaborators have included the Brodsky Quartet, cellist Raphael Wallfisch, violinists Ruggiero Ricci, Philippe Quint, Sergey Levitin, Lorraine McAslan and Hu Kun, horn player Eric Ruske, actor Andrew Sachs and principal players from the London Symphony Orchestra.

Victor’s extensive discography encompasses repertoire ranging from the complete solo piano music of Stravinsky and the complete keyboard sonatas of Cimarosa to concertos by Rachmaninov and Mendelssohn and Liszt transcriptions for piano and orchestra. He has recorded for Collins Classics, Naxos, ABC Classics and Dutton, including world-première recordings of concertos by Godard, Chaminade, Bate, Reizenstein, D’Erlanger, Braunfels, Mendelssohn, Simon, Vaughan Williams and Chopin, alongside chamber music by Bax, Vaughan Williams and Lacombe.

Alongside his performing career, Victor has given masterclasses in cities around the world and has taught at both the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he is currently a Senior Tutor. He is a Steinway Artist.
